A year ago I was invited to film audience reactions and the Q and A sessions with director Molly Dineen and Blacker Dread as they toured Molly's film "Being Blacker" around Britain. The pic above was at one of the first screenings at the Ritzy cinema in Brixton. "Being Blacker" is essential viewing and goes way further than giving an unprecedented insight into the world of this Brixton legend which of course it does. The film is funny, often poignant, and raises masses of questions - I know, I was there for many of the Q and A s. But above all it opens a window onto what it has meant for several generations from the 60's until now, to be black in Britain. Blacker's reality, peppered as it is with paradox and pitfalls, is familiar to many. If you haven't seen it already, make sure you don't miss it this time!
